For those of you who make your own products, I know you will agree with this next statement "Everything looks like an ingredient for a hair recipe!!". I have went through our supplement cabinet and looked up just about every supplement we have to see if it is beneficial for hair and or skin care. I was surprised most by turmeric, wheat germ and olive leaf, I have no idea olive leaf could help with acne and dandruff. My newest supplement turned hair and skin ingredient is ginseng. We got a bag of it from a friend and I had no idea what to do with it. My husband was taking some of it internally for energy aside from that, it just kind of sat on the shelf.

So I looked to my hair care encyclopedia; Google, and low and behold ginseng has been being used for ages in hair care and skin care!!

Ginseng:
"Ginseng has been used in many shampoo formulas, and a variety of ways exists to take ginseng for hair health."
"Add several tablespoons of the ginseng tincture to your favorite shampoo. Wet your hair with warm water to open the hair follicles and massage the shampoo deeply into your roots. Let it sit on your scalp for several minutes and repeat this process four to seven times a week." Source: Livestrong.com

"Traditional Asian medical practitioners ascribe many healing and curative properties to ginseng. Among them are acne scar healing, general skin care and soothing of skin irritation, wrinkle prevention, wound healing, relief of herpes outbreaks, anti-inflammatory properties, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-infective abilities. Taken together, these purported benefits of ginseng support including it in soaps to treat acne." Source: Livestrong.com

There are a few ginseng soaps and shampoos on the market claiming to help with acne and with hair loss. So, I did what I usually do and made a soap with ginseng! I can't wait to use it after it cures.

Turned out nice, huh? I love the colors! The ginseng made the soap a slight tan color on the bottom and I used Oxides for the top colors.

If you read my blog frequently you know I'm a keep it simple, style it once a week, type of natural haired person. (natural haired person?! Let's roll with it, k?) Well, these last couple of weeks I got the "bright" idea to try new styles and step out of my comfort zone and let me tell you it was a total and complete FAIL. All. of. it.

I tried flat twists. FAIL.
Wash n go. FAIL.
Ponytail. FAIL.

I have realized that I am style challenged. I don't know where it comes from because, I used to know how to braid and flat twist...I used to be able to cornrow...

So, from now on I'm keeping it simple. I'm sticking to my twist-outs and my weekly wash routine and that's it. I like big hair and stretched hair helps reduce tangles. Win/win.

Are you style challenged? Please comment, ya'll and let me know that I'm not alone. I am just not the one to be trying 50-11 different styles and products and routines. I stick to what works and keep it moving...

Also, DIY Hair Care Products has an awesome new shampoo bar called Creamsicle Hibiscus! It's awesome! Handmade, cold process, all natural, vegan and homemade soap! Creamsicle Hibiscus.

What is a shampoo bar?
A shampoo bar is essentially a bar of soap that is formulated to be used as a cleansing agent for your hair. Shampoo bars vary in ingredients and effectiveness, depending on what you're looking for in a shampoo. Some shampoo bars can double as body soap and the same goes for body soap, some can pass for shampoo bars, again, this depends on your personal preference and the ingredients in the product. At the end of the day soap is soap, this all shampoo and body soap is....soap.

What is the difference between shampoo bars and soap bars?
Really, not much. At most, they are superfatted. Superfatted? Superfatted is a term used in soap making that refers to when more oils are added then the lye in the soap needs to become soap. Huh? It means that extra oils have been added to the soap that have not interacted with the lye and are basically just floating around in the soap. Floating? Floating as in, it's like putting the oil straight into your hair. This is suppose to add moisturizing properties to the bar and essentially your hair.

As stated, ingredients in shampoo bars vary from company to company. Some add herbs such as nettle, marshmallow root, or even clays like bentonite and rhassoul.

Do shampoo bars cleanse the hair well?
This depends on 2 factors; the particular shampoo bar that you are using and what product build up you have on your hair. If the shampoo bar is superfatted with shea butter (or any other butter or heavy oils) for example, then you may feel a residue on your hair after washing. This also depends on the percent the shampoo bar was superfatted, i.e. the amount of oil floating around in the bar.

If you have an extensive amount of product build up on your hair from using commercial hair products, then this may be too much for some shampoo bars to handle. Notice, I said may be, some shampoo bars can handle the job and some can't. Again, this depends on the bar. If you use products that are not on the natural side, such as silicones, store bought gels, and such, you will more then likely need to use a stronger shampoo.

How do shampoo bars work best?
...with a low product regimen. Usually, someone who uses light oils and more natural products, will have more success with shampoo bars. Now, that is not to say, they won't work for you. Just give them a try and if you feel a residue or don't think they got your hair as clean as you would have liked try another type of shampoo bar or lessen the amount of product you apply to your hair between washes. Ya'll already know I believe less is best anyway...:)

Do shampoo bars leave a residue?
Yes, some can. Some find that to combat the residue left behind, they do an Apple Sider Vinegar Rinse after shampooing their hair. For an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse, just do a 1:3 part ratio; 1 part ACV to 3 parts water.

Have you tried shampoo bars? Did you like them?
