When platelets become activated they change shape (Fig 2) and emit growth factors that send chemical signals like emails and faxes to other growth factors to come back to the injured area where angiogenesis (formation of new blood circulation) and mitogenesis (formation of new cells) occurs and healing begins.

Alpha granules are storage units within platelets, which contain pre-packaged growth factors in an inactive form (see Fig 1). The main growth factors contained in these granules are transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and epithelial growth factor (EGF)
