Summer sun, hot temperatures and related humidity may damage your hair's cuticle resulting in dry, split, brittle or frizzy hair with ragged ends. Sun exposure can be just as damaging to unprotected hair as a super hot blow dryer. Follow these simple tips so that your hair will be well protected while you’re out enjoying your summer.
1. Take special care of color-treated hair by using a deep conditioner-a product containing keratin, jojoba oil, wheat germ protein or other natural ingredients that increase moisture, shine and elasticity. If color-treated hair is already damaged, the sun will make the cuticle even rougher, which makes hair more fragile and dried out.
2. Use sunscreen (yes, the same one you use for your body!) on your hair or use a special hair product containing sunscreen, or a leave-in conditioner to protect it when out in the sun. For prolonged periods of sun exposure, cover your hair with a scarf or hat.
3. Wet your hair before swimming in a pool because if it’s wet before you enter, it won't soak up as much chlorine.
4. Always wash and condition your hair after you get out of the pool or sea.
5. Drink plenty of water as it keeps your body hydrated throughout sizzling summer. Intake of water helps in flushing out all harmful matter that damages the health of your hair. It also provides natural glow and moisturizer.
6. Try to trim your hair often. This will prevent spilt ends and frizzy hair. Trimming also helps in getting rid of damaged hair that eventually affects the roots.
7. If you normally use hot styling tools (blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons), give your hair a rest during summer months. Air dry whenever possible or roller set your hair. Opt for easy chic styles.
